Look up while the wild geese are migrating, and you will see that they fly in a V formation. The leader bird at the point has the hardest job, leading the way and flying into the strong headwinds.

The rest of the flock knows this, and they help their leader; every flap of their wings creates an uplifting air current that literally boosts the leader goose. (When Bette Midler sings, “You are the wind beneath my wings,” she’s actually singing about geese. Or friendship. But I choose to believe geese.)

When the leader bird gets tired, it drops back into an easier position, allowing another goose to take the lead.

If a goose falls ill or becomes exhausted, the flock (the movement) doesn’t stop. The goose is escorted to the ground by two others who keep it warm and safe while they rest. If and when the goose recovers, the three rejoin the flock together.
